When to go & what to expect
Our pick: late spring or early autumn, when a flexible boat day is useful but long summer queues are less likely. Rail remains the backbone; boats are optional and must be checked for the exact date.
Build your budget
Price seven nights and the two transfer days first. Add boat tickets only after choosing the journeys you will make. A rail-and-navigation offer can be useful, but compare its validity with separate tickets rather than assuming it covers both lakes.

Look for a direct regional service or the simplest connection shown for your date. Travel after breakfast and keep the Varenna arrival afternoon local.

Regional rail with at least one change; keep it as a travel day.
Expect to change, commonly via Milan and possibly another hub. Choose a connection with realistic platform time and avoid a fixed attraction on arrival.

What to expect at each stop.
Milan
Day 1 · 1 nightArrival: Use Milano Centrale as the rail anchor and choose a stay with a simple metro or walking connection. Keep this as an arrival stop rather than trying to see the whole city.
Pick one central area and leave the rest of the day flexible. The lakes are the focus of this itinerary, so Milan does not need a compressed checklist.

Where to base yourself
Stay on a useful metro line between Centrale and the centre. A room beside the airport works poorly for this short city stop.
On your feet & with luggage
Metro use can keep walking modest, but large stations and the Duomo terraces add distance and stairs. Keep the overnight bag light.
Start with
If you arrive early, choose the Duomo area or one neighbourhood. Leave luggage before sightseeing and keep the afternoon free of multiple reservations.
Leave room for
Have dinner near the area you explored and prepare for the regional departure. Confirm which Milano Centrale platform area and ticket rules apply.
If the weather or your plans change
If arrival is late, skip the centre and use the evening near your accommodation. The route already includes more scenery ahead.

Varenna · Lake Como
Days 2–4 · 3 nightsArrival: Varenna-Esino station sits above the waterfront. Check the downhill walk to the accommodation and avoid bringing more luggage than you can manage on steps and uneven paving.
Use Varenna as one base for the central lake. Make one ferry loop, keep a separate local day and protect the final return rather than depending on the last boat.

Where to base yourself
Choose Varenna for ferry access or a nearby railway town for a quieter base. Confirm the exact climb, steps and check-in route from Varenna-Esino.
On your feet & with luggage
Expect slopes, steps and uneven paving between Varenna-Esino, the waterfront and accommodation. Confirm boat boarding access separately.
Start with
Use the clearest day for a ferry journey in the central-lake triangle. Check both outbound and return sailings before boarding.
Leave room for
Keep one afternoon for Varenna itself. A garden visit or waterfront walk gives the itinerary a reliable day even if boats are reduced.
If the weather or your plans change
If boats are disrupted, stay on the eastern rail shore or take a train to another station with a simple return. Do not improvise a long taxi circuit around the lake.
Choose the current season and confirm the return from the landing you will actually use.
Peschiera del Garda
Days 5–8 · 3 nightsArrival: The railway station is outside the fortified centre but within a manageable walk. Check your accommodation route before assuming the waterfront is beside the platform.
Treat the southern lake as a different trip from Lake Como. Mix one boat or bus outing with a local Peschiera day and keep the north of Garda for a longer itinerary.

Where to base yourself
Peschiera combines a railway station with a walkable centre. Check whether your property is inside the walls, by the lake or farther along a bus route.
On your feet & with luggage
Peschiera is comparatively manageable, though the station is outside the old town. Boat landings and day trips can still add long walks.
Start with
Start with the fortified centre and waterfront. Use another morning for a lower-lake boat or rail outing chosen from the current timetable.
Leave room for
Return with time for the final walk from the landing. Desenzano or Verona can work as a rail day if boat conditions do not suit.
If the weather or your plans change
In poor lake weather, use the railway for Verona or keep a local town day. Avoid building the trip around a long northern-lake boat chain.
Check seasonal routes, landing names and the last useful return before buying.
