Choose one shore, not “Lake Garda” as a single stop
The lake is long, and only the southern shore has railway stations. A sensible car-free plan starts with the town where you will sleep, then checks the last bus or boat that reaches it.

The official VisitGarda guide identifies Peschiera and Desenzano as the southern rail stations and Rovereto as the nearest railway approach for the northern area. Search the full station name for your date.
02 / Match the stay to the shore
A railway town is the easiest first base
Peschiera or Desenzano reduces the number of connections on arrival and departure days. Sirmione is attractive but has no station; Garda, Bardolino, Malcesine and Riva del Garda require their own bus or ferry plan.
If you choose a town without rail, check both the daytime journey and the final service after dinner. A waterfront hotel can still be a difficult base if the stop is far away or the route is highly seasonal.
03 / Use each mode for one job
Train for the gateway, bus for the shore, ferry for a lake day
Trains connect the southern gateways with Verona, Brescia and Milan. Local buses continue along the shore. VisitGarda’s transport overview is a starting point for current bus operators and airport links.
Boats are useful for a scenic day and for selected cross-lake journeys. They are not a universal substitute for buses: service frequency changes with the season and the full length of the lake can take much of the day.
04 / A manageable first day
Start with one rail town and one optional connection
From Verona, a simple first outing is Peschiera or Desenzano with a waterfront walk. Add one bus or boat destination only after checking the return. This leaves room for delays and avoids treating the lake as a checklist of distant towns.

05 / Read the date on the timetable
Treat ferry routes and frequency as seasonal
Navigazione Laghi publishes dated timetable tables, fares and current service notices on its official Lake Garda page. Check the date range above the table and confirm the last return in the same seasonal period.
Bad weather can delay or suspend sailings. Keep the railway gateway or a bus journey as a fallback and avoid a flight connection that depends on the final boat of the day.
