Start at Venezia Santa Lucia, with the bags sorted
This is a day visit that starts and ends at Venezia Santa Lucia, the station in historic Venice. Venezia Mestre is on the mainland. Check the destination printed on your rail booking; a ticket to Mestre still leaves another journey before this walk begins.
Give the city a full day between arrival and departure. If you only have a few hours, shorten the walk and choose between an indoor visit and more time outside. An airport arrival needs a different first leg, covered in our Marco Polo Airport guide.
Leave overnight luggage at your accommodation when possible. Otherwise compare a station deposit with Radical Storage locations in Venice, checking collection hours and the bridges on the return route. Morning: Cannaregio, Rialto and the way to St Mark’s
Walk from the station through Cannaregio towards Rialto, then continue towards Piazza San Marco. Save that sequence on a map rather than relying on a single straight-line distance: the canals determine where you can cross.
Leave room for a detour and a pause before Rialto. Stop for lunch before an afternoon admission rather than booking a visit that forces you to rush the entire morning. If the streets are busy or your group is tired, take the shorter route to the next planned stop and leave extra neighbourhoods for another visit.
This walking outline includes bridges and is not an assessed step-free route. If stairs are a concern, plan the individual station, landing-stage and attraction approaches before choosing the day’s sequence.
Afternoon: choose one substantial visit
Doge’s Palace can be the day’s main indoor stop. Use the museum’s official visitor information to check admission and luggage conditions. The museum currently says tickets without a specified date and time allow entry from noon; follow the conditions of your actual booking.

If interiors are not your priority, keep this time for the square, the waterfront and an unhurried return. A gondola ride, another major interior and a trip to the islands are separate choices; adding all of them would make this a very different day.
Return on foot or make the waterbus part of the plan
Before leaving St Mark’s, choose the route back to the station. Walking gives you another look at the city; a vaporetto can be a useful alternative when its stop and service fit. Consult ACTV’s official network and service information for the correct landing stage and direction.
Compare the price of the journeys you actually need with a time-based transport ticket. Do not assume a city waterbus ticket includes a gondola, a water taxi or an airport boat. Allow for boarding queues and the walk from the landing stage to your train platform.
Work backwards from the train: reach the station, collect any stored bags first, and leave time for a missed boat or a slower walk. The last possible connection is a poor target when the onward train has a fixed booking.
Check the access fee for your travel year
As checked on , the official Venice access-fee portal says the 2026 trial has ended: from 27 July there is no fee to pay and no exemption request to obtain. This is the current 2026 position, not a promise about future years. Recheck the portal when planning a later trip.
