Plan your time, not just your stops.
Eight days, seven nights: three nights in Rome, two in Florence and two in Venice. Add a night in Venice for an island day, or in Rome for a slower start. The itinerary ends in Venice; allow additional travel time if your return flight leaves from Rome.
When to go & what to expect
Our pick: spring or autumn for long city walks. In summer, put outdoor sights early and keep the middle of the day light. This is an urban route, not a step-free one: bridges, cobbles and museum queues can be tiring.
Build your budget
Price the two intercity trains and seven hotel nights first. Then add timed attractions and local transport. Compare train fare flexibility as well as the headline price; a cheap fixed departure can be poor value if your flight is late.

Look for a direct high-speed service. Travel after breakfast, leave luggage at your accommodation if available, and keep the afternoon reservation-free.

Direct high-speed train to Santa Lucia
Choose a direct service to the island station. Avoid accidentally booking only as far as Venezia Mestre. Check the final walking or boat leg to your hotel before buying.

What to expect at each stop.
Rome
Days 1–3 · 3 nightsArrival: If arriving at Roma Termini, choose accommodation with a convenient walk or public transport connection from the station. An airport-area hotel is not a practical base for this city stay.
Begin slowly: ancient Rome on one day, the historic centre on another, and keep one unplanned evening for neighbourhood wandering.

Where to base yourself
Look around Monti or a convenient Metro stop. Check the actual walk from the station with luggage, lift access and late check-in; “central Rome” covers a large area.
On your feet & with luggage
Cobbles, uneven surfaces around the ancient sites and long stretches on foot. Split the sights across days; use the Metro or a bus between neighbourhoods. Check accessible entrances separately before reserving.
Start with
After an arrival evening, give ancient Rome its own morning: Colosseum and Forum, with a timed entry booked directly. Do not put another major ticketed sight immediately afterwards.
Leave room for
Use the next day for a walk from the Pantheon towards Piazza Navona. Leave time to sit down for lunch, then cross towards Trastevere for an evening rather than racing through another checklist.
If the weather or your plans change
If you arrive tired or it is very hot, drop a sight instead of compressing the day. A neighbourhood walk and a long meal are a better arrival plan than a non-refundable museum slot.

Florence
Days 4–5 · 2 nightsArrival: Direct high-speed trains use Firenze Santa Maria Novella, an easy walk from the centre.
Florence rewards a compact plan. Reserve one major museum, then leave room for the river, markets and viewpoints.

Where to base yourself
The Santa Maria Novella side of the centre simplifies arrival and departure. Oltrarno can suit a quieter evening base, but check the extra bridge crossing with bags.
On your feet & with luggage
Keep the central walk and the uphill viewpoint as separate choices. Piazzale Michelangelo adds a climb; a bus can reduce it. Check your museum entrance and accommodation lift if stairs are a concern.
Start with
Set aside your full morning for the Uffizi rather than trying to fit several major collections into the same day. Keep your arrival day for getting oriented.
Leave room for
Walk along the Arno and into Oltrarno. Leave the viewpoint at Piazzale Michelangelo for a clear evening; choose a bus if the uphill walk does not appeal.
If the weather or your plans change
If rain is forecast, allow more time for your planned museum visit rather than adding another timed booking. In strong heat, postpone the uphill viewpoint until conditions are more comfortable.

Venice
Days 6–8 · 2 nightsArrival: Choose Venezia Santa Lucia, not Mestre, if you want to step from the train directly into Venice.
Use the first evening to get your bearings and the next full day for quieter neighbourhoods. Add a third night if you want a separate island day.

Where to base yourself
Cannaregio can reduce the arrival walk from Santa Lucia; Dorsoduro suits a slower waterside stay. Count bridges on the route to the property and confirm whether a lift is available.
On your feet & with luggage
Bridges frequently mean steps, especially with luggage. Choose a stay near a useful vaporetto stop and check the exact route from it. A boat journey does not by itself make the whole hotel transfer step-free.
Start with
Start your full day early with a walk through Cannaregio, then choose one main sight. Keep bags at your accommodation on departure day only if storage is confirmed.
Leave room for
Use a vaporetto for a purposeful cross-city journey, then walk Dorsoduro and the lagoon edge. With a third night, consider an island excursion; with two, stay in Venice.

If weather turns or boat queues build, stay within one district. Check Venice’s current visitor-access rules separately from your transport ticket and accommodation booking.
