Eight days, seven nights: three nights in Naples, two in Sorrento and two in Salerno. Keep one Naples day for the city even if Pompeii is important, and use only one main coast outing from each later base.

Our pick: spring or autumn for city walking and a chance of useful ferry service. In winter or rough weather, assume rail and bus are the dependable structure and treat every ferry as optional.

Price the three stays and the railway backbone first. Keep separate allowances for EAV services, city transport, ferries and attraction tickets because they do not form one universal pass.

Allow most of a half-day
Seasonal ferry, or a current bus-and-rail alternative.
A direct coastal ferry is seasonal. If it is not operating, compare the current bus-and-rail alternatives and keep most of the day for the transfer.

What to expect at each stop.
Naples
Days 1–3 · 3 nightsArrival: Napoli Centrale, Piazza Garibaldi and the local railway levels are connected but not interchangeable names. Choose accommodation around the journeys you expect to make.
Give Naples two full days: one for the historic centre and one for a museum, neighbourhood or Pompeii trip. Do not make the city only a transfer hub.

Where to base yourself
Choose between a central historic-area stay and a station-connected base. Check the evening route back rather than judging only by daytime walking distance.
On your feet & with luggage
Naples includes hills, cobbles and busy interchange passages. Funiculars reduce climbs, but check lift access and keep luggage out of sightseeing hours.
Start with
Give the historic centre a full morning. On another day, choose Pompeii or a Naples museum rather than attempting both.
Leave room for
Use metro or a funicular to connect a second neighbourhood. Return for a slower evening and keep the last Naples night clear before the local train.
If the weather or your plans change
In heavy rain or heat, prioritise one indoor visit and a shorter neighbourhood loop. Pompeii deserves a separate weather decision.

Sorrento
Days 4–5 · 2 nightsArrival: Check whether your service uses the EAV/Circumvesuviana network or a seasonal Campania Express product. The station is uphill from the marina, which matters with bags.
Use one day for Sorrento itself and one carefully chosen outing. Capri, Pompeii and the Amalfi Coast are separate full-day decisions rather than additions to the same schedule.

Where to base yourself
Stay within a manageable walk of Sorrento station if you plan an onward ferry or local train. Marina accommodation can involve a steep or lift-assisted connection.
On your feet & with luggage
The station-to-marina connection is steep. Choose accommodation with the transfer you will use most often and verify any lift operating hours.
Start with
Use one morning for Sorrento’s centre and viewpoints. Choose one separate outing only after checking the full return.
Leave room for
Leave time for the marina or a quieter peninsula walk. Confirm the next morning’s coast transfer before committing to a late excursion.
If the weather or your plans change
If boats are cancelled, use the town day or a rail-based visit. Do not replace one cancelled island trip with several rushed coastal buses.

Salerno
Days 6–8 · 2 nightsArrival: A seasonal ferry can make the coast-to-coast transfer attractive, but it is not the all-weather backbone. Keep a bus-and-rail alternative and check the port-to-hotel walk.
Base in Salerno for a final coastal day with a straightforward onward railway. Choose Amalfi or another single town and protect the return service.

Where to base yourself
Stay between Salerno station, the historic centre and the relevant ferry landing. Verify the walking route because different coastal services can use different piers.
On your feet & with luggage
Salerno’s core is fairly linear, while coastal towns add stairs and steep lanes. Treat ferry boarding and bus access as separate checks.
Start with
Use the clearest day for one return outing to Amalfi or another town served on your date. Start with the last return and work backwards.
Leave room for
Keep a separate half-day for Salerno. Its railway connection makes departure simpler than returning across the entire coast.
If the weather or your plans change
If the sea service stops, stay in Salerno or use one bus outing with generous margins. A cancelled ferry is not a reason to chain several buses.
