The planning notebook / Naples to Pompeii

Pompeii from Naples by train: choose the station and entrance

“Pompeii station” can mean different rail lines and different approaches to the archaeological park. Choose the entrance first, then match it to the station and ticket shown in the official journey result.

Entrance first, railway second

Do not buy a ticket based only on the word “Pompei”. The archaeological park has three entrances, while different railway lines serve different stations. Match the line, station and entrance before leaving Naples.

01 / Match the final walk

Choose the train that serves your entrance

Circumvesuviana Napoli–PoggiomarinoPompei SantuarioPiazza Anfiteatro.
Trenitalia Napoli–Salerno linePompeiWalk or verify the current Pompei Link connection.

The park’s official directions page maps these rail approaches to the entrances. Save the entrance name with the station rather than relying on the first result in a map app.

02 / Two separate tickets

Keep transport and admission details separate

A train ticket does not normally include archaeological-park admission unless the product explicitly says so. Check the railway operator’s conditions and buy admission only through the park’s official channel or an authorised seller.

The park’s official ticket page lists current entrances, opening information and the authorised online route. It recommends advance purchase to reduce the entry queue. Verify the visitor name and date requirements before paying.

03 / Give the ruins enough time

Plan Pompeii as the main activity of the day

The site is large, exposed to weather and uneven underfoot. Choose a small number of areas from the official map, carry water within the current rules and use sun or rain protection appropriate to the date.

The official visitor guide and entrance map are better planning tools than a long list of houses copied from a previous season. Buildings can close for conservation or safety.

04 / Arrive ready to walk

Do not bring a transfer-day suitcase without checking

The park publishes current visitor facilities, including paid luggage storage at selected entrances, on its official services page. Availability and accepted bag sizes can change, so confirm them before building a hotel-change day around storage.

Leaving luggage at your Naples accommodation is usually simpler when you return to the same base. If Pompeii is between Naples and the Amalfi Coast, compare the whole transfer with our Amalfi Coast without a car guide.

05 / Leave before the plan becomes tight

Protect the return to Naples

Save the route back from the same or another entrance before you go inside. Circumvesuviana timetables are published by EAV on its official rail timetable page. Check current service notices as well as the timetable.

Naples plus Pompeii is more than a casual extension to a Rome day trip. Our day trips from Rome comparison explains why the two destinations are better treated as separate plans.

If Naples is your base, use our Naples public transport guide to distinguish ANM metro and funiculars from Trenitalia and EAV rail services before choosing a city ticket.

06 / Before leaving Naples

Pompeii day-trip checklist

  • I saved the station, entrance and walking route together.
  • Transport and admission tickets are both clear.
  • I checked current buildings, hours and visitor rules.
  • My footwear and weather plan suit an outdoor archaeological site.
  • Luggage arrangements are confirmed.
  • I saved the return and one later workable service.
