A rail base or a room on the coast?
Compare the arrival with your bags, not only the sightseeing days. Salerno can simplify the long-distance rail part of a trip. A coastal stay gives you evenings in the place you came to see, but adds a bus or boat journey and possibly a steep last walk.

Ask a prospective host for a practical arrival route with luggage. “Near Amalfi” can describe an address that still needs transport. Our mountains-to-coast itinerary treats this region as an overnight stop, not a detour squeezed between two long train rides.
Compare the ferry with the bus for your actual date
Travelmar’s arrival guidance describes Salerno’s Molo Concordia near the railway station. Use its current timetable to check the departure pier, stops and return sailing. Do not assume every boat serves every town or that a summer schedule applies in winter.
For road connections, use SITA Sud’s Campania timetables. Match the direction, weekday or holiday pattern, and stop to your plan. A bus is useful for places away from a harbour, but the published journey should not be treated as protection against traffic or a queue.
Boat and bus tickets are separate products. Read the applicable luggage rules before travelling: Travelmar’s conditions specify baggage limits and charges as well as disruption terms. A suitcase transfer is a different trip from a day out with a small bag.
A simple day: Salerno to Amalfi and back
- Choose an outward and a sensible return. Check both before buying the first leg, leaving room after your incoming train.
- Spend the middle of the day in Amalfi. Walk into the town, stop for lunch and choose one indoor visit if it interests you.
- Return with some margin. Do not pair the final possible boat with a fixed onward train and no workable alternative.
The Amalfi Paper Museum is an option already covered in our activities collection. Check its opening and tour arrangements before building the day around it. A second coastal town is optional, not necessary to make the outing worthwhile.
Give Ravello its own space
If gardens and hilltop views matter more than another harbour, plan a separate Ravello outing. Work out the connection from Amalfi and the return first, then add Villa Rufolo. This avoids turning lunch, a museum, a boat ride and an uphill transfer into one tightly linked chain.
For a stay of only one full day, choose either a coastal day or the Ravello visit according to your interests. For a longer stay, keeping the order flexible makes it easier to respond to conditions.
Prepare for a day when the boat does not run
Weather or operational changes can disrupt ferries. A bus timetable is a fallback to investigate, not a guaranteed replacement seat. Recheck notices with the operator before setting out.
- Save the road alternative and where its stop is located.
- Have a day that can stay in your base if travelling no longer makes sense.
- Keep flight-day and long-distance train plans away from a fragile final sailing.
- Check the full walk to the room and carry only the bags you can manage on it.
