Tram or taxi: choose for the whole journey

The current GEST ticket list gives the €2 fare. Do not budget from an older €1.70 listing: urban fares changed in August 2026. For taxi arrangements, consult Florence’s official arrival guide and confirm the applicable price at the rank. A quoted central-area fare may not cover every address or every supplement.

Find T2 and get off for your actual destination

The GEST airport guide puts Peretola Aeroporto tram stop about two minutes’ walk from the terminal. Follow the tram signs after arrivals and look for T2 towards San Marco–Università. Add the wait to the ride time rather than starting your hotel-arrival estimate at touchdown.

For a train connection, the station-area stops include Alamanni–Stazione SMN and Valfonda–Stazione SMN. For accommodation nearer San Marco, staying on the tram can reduce the final walk. Compare your entrance with the current GEST route map; do not follow an old guide that treats Unità as T2’s normal city terminus.

A stop name containing “Stazione” does not mean you are already on a railway platform. If you have booked an onward train, allow time to enter Santa Maria Novella and find its departure board.

Buy the ticket and make it valid for travel

Stop machines sell tickets, and GEST also lists the at bus app and onboard contactless payment. Choose one method. A purchase confirmation alone is not a substitute for following that method’s activation instructions.

1. With a paper ticket, validate it when you board and retain it.
2. With an app ticket, activate it as instructed before boarding.
3. With contactless, use the onboard reader and keep the same card or device available for a check.

Read Autolinee Toscane’s tip tap instructions if you will pay by card. The system’s urban rules require a tap when boarding each vehicle; do not assume one card can also pay for everyone travelling with you. For a group, arrange a valid ticket or supported payment method for each passenger.

Check luggage size before choosing the tram

GEST permits one free bag up to 55 × 40 × 20 cm and 10 kg. Larger permitted bags need a supplementary ticket; its published maximum is 80 × 45 × 25 cm and 20 kg. Check the linked airport guide for the full allowance before travelling with a large suitcase. Trams do not have dedicated baggage storage.

Measure the case you will actually bring, including protruding parts. If your luggage falls outside the rules, choose a suitable taxi instead of assuming an extra ticket solves any size problem. Keep doorways and the spaces other passengers need clear.

For the final walk, consider paving, steps and the accommodation’s lift. If you reach Florence before check-in, ask your host about storage or use our Florence luggage-storage guide before heading to a museum.

Return to Peretola, with time for the terminal

On the way back, choose T2 towards Peretola Aeroporto. Use the direction-specific GEST timetable: at the time of checking it lists the first airport-bound departure from San Marco at 05:10, while the first departure from the airport is 05:00. Friday and Saturday have later services, but these are not an all-night operation.

Work backwards from your airline’s required terminal arrival time. Include reaching the city stop, waiting, the ride and the walk into departures. If the first tram is too late, book an appropriate taxi; a flight’s departure time is not your target arrival time at the airport.
