PSA is Pisa Airport, not Florence Airport
Pisa Airport is useful for Florence, but the normal rail journey begins after a separate PisaMover ride to Pisa Centrale. Search the complete chain before choosing a flight around a tight arrival or departure.
Decide whether Pisa is the destination or the interchange
| Plan | First useful route | The deciding detail |
|---|---|---|
| Stay near central Pisa | PisaMover to Pisa Centrale, then walk or local transport | The accommodation’s actual distance from the station |
| Continue to Florence | PisaMover, then a train to Firenze SMN | The live connection and final Florence arrival |
| See Pisa before Florence | Leave bags only if the pickup still fits the onward train | Walking time to Piazza del Duomo and any reserved entry |
| Very early flight | Stay in Pisa or verify a suitable transfer | The first complete journey, not one individual leg |
PisaMover connects the airport with Pisa Centrale
The official PisaMover service page describes the automated shuttle between the airport and Pisa Centrale, with an intermediate parking stop. It publishes current operating hours, fares and ticket channels. Check them for the travel date rather than relying on an old timetable or a third-party summary.
Follow signs for PisaMover after leaving arrivals. At Pisa Centrale, allow time to exit the shuttle system, find the correct railway platform and handle any separate ticket. A frequent shuttle still does not turn independently booked legs into a guaranteed connection.
Continue from Pisa Centrale to Firenze SMN
Search Pisa Centrale to Firenze Santa Maria Novella in the official Trenitalia journey planner. Compare the live departure, changes and ticket instructions. Not every train follows the same stopping pattern, and disruption can change the useful connection after a flight.
Firenze SMN is central, but the final walk, tram or bus still matters. Use our Firenze SMN photo guide for the concourse and exits, and the Italy train-ticket guide for regional ticket instructions.

A Pisa stop needs time beyond the airport transfer
Pisa Centrale is not beside the Leaning Tower. If sightseeing is part of the transfer day, add the station-to-monuments journey, luggage arrangements and the return to the station before choosing an onward train. The monument operator publishes official directions to Piazza del Duomo.
A first or final night in Pisa can be more resilient than forcing a visit between a flight and Florence. For a dedicated outing, our Pisa or Lucca day-trip guide explains the station walk and visit choices. The Tuscany without a car guide helps decide whether Florence or another city should be the base.
Protect the first and last connection
For an arrival, allow for baggage collection and the next usable shuttle and train. For a departure, begin with the airline’s required airport time and work backwards through both legs. Check the last or first complete chain; a train to Pisa Centrale is not useful if it misses the available airport shuttle.
When the chain is too fragile, compare a night in Pisa with a verified taxi or transfer. Confirm the pickup point, complete price and cancellation conditions in writing. A longer route on paper can be the calmer plan when it removes a risky same-day connection.
