Price seven nights and the two intercity rail days first. Keep separate allowances for Rome transport, the Orvieto funicular or integrated product and Perugia local transport. Buy timed attractions only after the transfer plan is stable.

Roma Termini → Orvieto
Allow about 1–1½ hours by rail
Regional or intercity train, followed by funicular or bus to the old town.
Choose a regional or intercity departure that suits the accommodation check-in. On arrival, the station is below the old town; continue by the checked funicular or bus rather than assuming a level walk.

What to expect at each stop.
Rome
Days 1–3 · 3 nightsArrival: Use Roma Termini or another well-connected station as the transport anchor. Choose the accommodation for the city stay first, then check the departure route towards Orvieto.
Keep one day for ancient Rome, one for the historic centre and an open evening for a neighbourhood. Orvieto is an overnight stop here, so it does not need to be squeezed into the Rome stay.

Where to base yourself
Choose a base on a simple route from Termini and within reach of the city areas you actually plan to visit. Avoid moving hotels before the Umbrian section.
On your feet & with luggage
Rome involves long distances, cobbles and crowded interchanges. Split major sights across days and use public transport for the return from a distant neighbourhood.
Bags after checkout
Ask your accommodation about storage first. If collecting elsewhere, plan around your actual departure station: Roma Termini and Roma Tiburtina need different routes. Check collection hours and the full price before paying.

Give ancient Rome its own morning with one main reservation. Use the next day for a historic-centre walk that can expand or contract around weather and energy.
Leave room for
Keep one afternoon for a neighbourhood, long meal or museum rather than adding a third headline sight. Confirm the Orvieto departure the evening before.
If the weather or your plans change
In heat or heavy crowds, reduce the walking radius and use Metro or bus for the return. The route has two quieter bases ahead, so Rome does not need to become a checklist.

Orvieto
Days 4–5 · 2 nightsArrival: The railway station is below the historic centre. The integrated Orvieto Link combines rail and funicular, but confirm the operating hours and the remaining walk before relying on it with bags.
Staying overnight removes the pressure of a same-day return to Rome. Give the cathedral and lanes their own afternoon, then use the next morning for an underground or viewpoint visit.

Where to base yourself
Stay in or close to the upper historic centre, but confirm how luggage reaches the property from the funicular terminus. A panoramic address can add steps and steep lanes.
On your feet & with luggage
The funicular removes the main climb from the railway station, but the upper town still has slopes and stone streets. Verify the hotel approach with luggage.
Start with
Travel from Rome after breakfast. On the full morning, choose one underground visit, well or viewpoint and keep enough time for the cathedral without hurrying.
Leave room for
See the cathedral after check-in, then walk the central lanes as day-trip traffic thins. Keep the second evening free before the more complex transfer to Perugia.
If the weather or your plans change
If the funicular is unavailable, use the current replacement or city-bus information. Do not begin the uphill route with luggage until the alternative is clear.

Perugia
Days 6–8 · 2 nightsArrival: Perugia Fontivegge is below the historic centre. Compare the Minimetrò, bus and escalator route to the accommodation instead of judging the transfer by map distance alone.
Use the first half-day to understand the vertical city. Keep the full day for the centre and one cultural visit; add Assisi only if the trip is extended.

Where to base yourself
A stay near a useful Minimetrò stop or upper-city bus route can reduce repeated climbs. Check the late-evening return and the final station journey with bags.
On your feet & with luggage
Perugia is a steep, multi-level city. Minimetrò, buses and covered escalators reduce climbing, but they do not make every historic street step-free.
Start with
Begin at Piazza IV Novembre and follow the ridge through the historic centre. Use the full day for one museum and one neighbourhood rather than an extra regional day trip.
Leave room for
Descend through Rocca Paolina and its covered routes, then return by the most convenient public transport. Keep the departure morning light.
If the weather or your plans change
In poor weather, use the covered escalator connections and choose an indoor visit. Add Assisi only with another night and a separately checked transport plan.
