Use public transport to connect walks, not every sight
Many central sights are close enough to combine on foot. Public transport becomes most useful when it prevents a long repeat walk, reaches a district outside the centre or protects the energy of someone in your group.

Check the current products and prices on ATAC’s official tickets and passes page. Buy from an authorised channel and follow the instructions for that format. Paper, app and contactless travel can require different actions even when they cover the same network.
03 / Contactless travel
Use the same card or device throughout the journey
ATAC’s Tap & Go system accepts supported contactless cards and devices on covered metro, bus and tram services. Tap at the reader when required, including when changing vehicles. Continue with the same physical card or the same wallet device so the system can apply the correct journey rules.
Each traveller needs a separate payment method for simultaneous travel. Keep it available in case of inspection and check that the reader confirms the tap. Read the current instructions and coverage on the official ATAC Tap & Go guide.
Phone or watch payments create a device token
The wallet version of a card may be recognised differently from the physical card. Do not switch between them during the same journey unless the current ATAC instructions explicitly allow it.
04 / Outside the ordinary city trip
Do not assume a Rome ticket covers Fiumicino Airport
Airport trains and coaches have their own products and conditions. ATAC’s urban ticket rules exclude some special connections, and the right choice depends on whether you need Termini, another rail station or a bus stop closer to your accommodation.

05 / On the day
Check the route again before a timed visit
Construction, demonstrations and planned strikes can alter lines or stops. Use ATAC status updates and the journey planner shortly before departure. If arrival time matters, keep a walking or metro alternative and leave a buffer.
At a bus stop, match the route number and direction with the stop display. On the metro, follow the terminal station for your direction and recheck interchange signs rather than relying on colour alone.
