Plan the boat around the walk
For a first day, choose one vaporetto journey that saves a repeat walk or gives you a view from the water. Add a time pass only when your itinerary contains enough separate journeys to make it useful.

Use a vaporetto for distance, islands or tired legs
Venice’s historic centre is explored mainly on foot. A vaporetto is most useful for a longer trip along the Grand Canal, crossing to Giudecca, visiting lagoon islands or avoiding a second long walk back to the station.
A stop that looks close on the map can sit on the wrong side of a canal. Check the stop name, direction and walking route on both ends. Our one-day Venice itinerary shows how one boat ride can support a mostly walking day.

ACTV offers single-journey and time-based products. Check the current price, duration and included services in the official ACTV urban-services guide before purchase. Count the rides you realistically expect to take; walking between nearby sights does not use the pass.
03 / Before boarding
Validate at the start and when you change
ACTV instructs passengers to validate a ticket at the beginning of the journey and at each change. Hold the card or device at the reader before entering the boarding area and wait for confirmation. Keep the ticket with you throughout the trip.
If you buy through an app, follow its activation steps and timing; purchasing and activating are not always the same action. Read the AVM Venezia app instructions before depending on a mobile ticket, and keep enough battery for inspection.
04 / Separate networks and products
Check the airport connection by name
A standard Venice time ticket does not automatically include every service from Marco Polo Airport. Alilaguna operates its own waterbus connections, while ACTV airport-bus coverage depends on the specific ticket or supplement. Match the operator and product to the service you intend to board.

“Waterbus” is not one universal ticket
Check whether the service is ACTV or Alilaguna. The route, stop and branding tell you which operator’s conditions apply.
05 / Make the pass earn its place
Group boat journeys into the pass window
If you plan Murano, Burano or another island day, check the complete outward and return route, including the last useful departure. Put those journeys within the same ticket window where practical. Leave extra time for queues at busy stops and for boarding with luggage.
For a station-to-centre day, decide whether the outbound or return journey benefits more from the boat. Walking one way and taking a vaporetto the other can be simpler than changing boats only to use a pass more often.
