Use a taxi for the difficult part
A short ride from the station, a late arrival or a steep final approach can justify a taxi. Compare the complete journey for your group, including bags and walking, rather than trying to make every leg use the same transport.
When a local ride earns its place
Before booking, mark the exact entrance to your accommodation and the station exit you will use. A short distance can involve steps, uneven paving or an uphill walk. Ask your host where a driver can actually stop and what remains on foot; “door to door” needs checking in historic centres.
| Situation | Useful comparison | Check first |
|---|---|---|
| Station to accommodation | Walking or a city ticket against one taxi for the group | Rank location, queue and luggage capacity |
| Late airport arrival | The last public service against a licensed taxi or prebooked transfer | Delayed-flight waiting policy and the final address |
| A village or rural activity | A return transfer against the available local bus | A confirmed pickup for the journey back |
A private transfer, often described as NCC, is a service booked with a driver. Read its own quotation and cancellation terms. An app is a booking channel: identify whether its offer is a licensed taxi or another service before comparing prices.
Rome: identify the vehicle and use a recognised pickup
Rome’s official taxi guide describes authorised taxis as white vehicles with a TAXI roof sign, the city emblem and a licence number. It lists ranks including Piazza dei Cinquecento at Termini. Follow the signed rank instead of accepting an unsolicited ride inside the station.
Rome’s municipal taxi and tariff page gives the 060609 telephone service and Chiama Taxi app. For an ordinary metered trip, check that the meter is running and ask for a receipt. Save the destination address in writing so there is no confusion between similarly named hotels.
If you need a child seat, space for a folded wheelchair or a vehicle you can board without transferring from a wheelchair, describe that requirement when arranging the ride and obtain confirmation. A generic car booking does not establish that the vehicle meets it.
Check what the price covers
Taxi rules and supplements are local. For a metered ride, consult the municipality’s tariff and ask about call-out, luggage and passenger supplements where relevant. For a private transfer, request the total for the whole group, with the pickup, destination and any stops written down.
Rome’s published airport fixed fares apply to specified destinations and conditions, including the Aurelian Walls boundary for the central-Rome fare. They are not a price to every hotel described online as “Rome”. Check your address against the current tariff; deviations and additional pickups can change which rule applies.
For a prebooked transfer, establish when included waiting starts, what happens after a delayed train or flight, and how the driver will contact you. Check accepted payment and the cancellation deadline before paying. A cheap headline quote is hard to compare if these details are missing.

In Venice, specify road or water
A road taxi and a water taxi solve different journeys. For the historic centre, check the landing point as carefully as the hotel name. Ask the property whether the proposed landing works for your arrival, including steps, bridges and any remaining walk with bags.
Marco Polo Airport’s official transport page separates road connections, Alilaguna and private water taxis. A public boat ticket is not interchangeable with a private water-taxi booking. Compare the total for your party and ask about luggage capacity and boarding assistance.
Arrange the return before leaving the easy connections
For an evening meal outside town or a remote activity, arrange a named pickup point and a way to contact the operator. Do not assume a city app will find a vehicle wherever the outing ends. Leave time between the return ride and an important train.
- Save the operator, address, pickup time and booking reference offline.
- Confirm the group size, bags and any specific vehicle needs.
- Keep the receipt and the vehicle or licence details with the booking.
Municipal and airport information checked . The comparisons are editorial planning advice; individual fares and vehicle availability need a booking-specific check.
