One main area, with room for a second stop
For a first independent visit, choose Capri town and a viewpoint, or Anacapri and one main attraction. Add another stop only when the boats, queues and your energy allow. Keep the return crossing as the fixed point of the day.
Start and finish at the correct harbour
Compare Sorrento–Capri crossings with the operating companies, including NLG’s booking service and Caremar’s date-based timetable. Search for the return as well as the outward journey. A route listing is not confirmation that your preferred sailing operates on your date.
For Sorrento’s ferry port, use the departure details for Marina Piccola and the operator’s ticket office around Piazza Marinai d’Italia. Do not head to Sorrento’s Marina Grande fishing harbour by mistake. On Capri, the ferry arrival is Marina Grande. Save both the operator and the boarding instructions, including any ticket-collection or check-in requirement.
Include the journey down from your Sorrento accommodation, the boarding margin and the transfer uphill on Capri. The sailing time alone is not the length of the outing. A day from an existing Sorrento stay on our Naples, Sorrento and Salerno route is easier to plan than an island visit squeezed between changing hotels.
Capri town and Anacapri are different destinations
| Focus | A workable outline | Allow for |
|---|---|---|
| Capri town | Port → town → a viewpoint and lunch → port | Funicular or local-transport queues and walking |
| Anacapri | Port → Anacapri → Monte Solaro or Villa San Michele → port | The road transfer and time at the chosen attraction |
| A boat outing | A confirmed island cruise plus a modest amount of time ashore | Exact landing, inclusions, sea conditions and the return connection |
The funicular connects Marina Grande with Capri town, not Anacapri. The Monte Solaro chairlift is a separate attraction reached from Anacapri. Avoid putting “take the lift” in your plan without specifying which one and how you reach it.
Option one: Capri town, a walk and a view
Take the port-to-town connection and begin around the Piazzetta. The municipality’s port information describes the funicular connection; check operation locally before relying on it. Once in town, give yourself time for the lanes rather than booking an immediate onward transfer.
The Gardens of Augustus offer views towards the Faraglioni and Marina Piccola. Check admission and opening information for your date. A viewpoint visit does not require adding every path you can see below it; account for the climb back before extending a walk.
Keep lunch and the return to Marina Grande in the same area-based plan. If the town and viewpoints are the reason you came, there is no need to add a boat excursion simply because it is offered at the port.

Option two: Anacapri and one main visit
Use the local bus connection or a licensed taxi to Anacapri, checking the departure point on arrival. The Monte Solaro chairlift operator locates its lower station near Piazza Vittoria. Check the day’s operating hours and last descent before buying; the chairlift is not included in the ferry fare.
The view can be the centrepiece of the day. Leave time at the top and then return for a walk and a meal in Anacapri. Consider whether everyone in your party is comfortable using a chairlift, and ask the operator about boarding requirements if you have specific mobility needs.
For a house and garden visit instead, look at Villa San Michele. Choose it according to your interests, rather than treating it as an automatic extra after the summit. Our Italy taxi guide explains what to confirm if a local ride makes these transfers easier.
The Blue Grotto needs a flexible plan
The Italian Ministry of Culture’s Blue Grotto page states that adverse sea conditions can close the site. Entry uses small rowing boats; their charge is separate from the grotto admission. Check the current booking procedure and the total cost, including how you reach the entrance.
A tour around Capri does not necessarily enter the grotto. Read the exact itinerary and ask what happens if entry is unavailable. Our boat trips and rental guide separates a ferry crossing, a shared excursion and a private booking so you can compare like with like.
If the grotto is your priority, let it replace a substantial part of the town or Anacapri plan. Do not build the rest of the day around a guaranteed short queue. A closure should still leave you a pleasant visit ashore, not an itinerary whose only purpose has disappeared.

Work back from the boat you intend to catch
Set a time to leave your last visit that includes the local journey, possible queues and the operator’s boarding deadline. Check service updates during the day. Caremar explicitly warns that scheduled departures can be cancelled and directs travellers to live departure information.
For a day trip, plan an earlier useful return instead of relying on the final sailing. Avoid making a flight or an important mainland train depend on the island crossing running exactly to time. If the sea forecast is poor, a day in Sorrento can be a better use of that date.
- Confirm both ferry legs, the operator and ticket instructions.
- Budget for local transport, admissions, lunch and any luggage charge.
- Choose Capri town or Anacapri as the main focus.
- Carry water, sun protection and a small day bag.
- Save the return details offline and check current service notices.
