Our pick: spring or early autumn for long portico and centre walks. Summer can be hot and humid, so keep outdoor sections early and reserve the middle of the day for interiors or a slow lunch.

Price six nights and two regional journeys first. Add only the city transport and monument tickets you expect to use. Bologna day trips are optional because Ferrara and Ravenna already have their own overnight stays.

What to expect at each stop.
Bologna
Days 1–3 · 3 nightsArrival: Bologna Centrale is a large, multi-level station north of the historic centre. Check the platform level and the final bus or walking route before arrival, especially with luggage.
Give Bologna two full days before using it as a transport hub. Keep the porticoes and food markets on one flexible walk, then choose one museum, tower or hillside outing.

Where to base yourself
Stay between Bologna Centrale and the historic centre, or on a direct city-bus route. Check the late-evening walk under the porticoes as well as the daytime distance.
On your feet & with luggage
Bologna is mostly a long urban walk with historic paving. Porticoes provide shade and shelter, while the station’s multiple levels add transfer distance.
Start with
Begin at Piazza Maggiore and follow a coherent portico walk. Use the second morning for one reserved sight or market area rather than filling both days with day trips.
Leave room for
Let lunch be part of the plan, then continue through one neighbourhood. If San Luca is important, give its bus or walking approach a separate half-day.
If the weather or your plans change
In poor weather, keep the route within the covered porticoes and choose one museum. Ferrara can still be reached later because it is the next overnight stop.

Ferrara
Day 4 · 1 nightArrival: Ferrara station is outside the medieval core. Walk, use a city bus or confirm a bicycle option after leaving the bags; do not assume every rental accepts luggage or one-way returns.
One overnight gives Ferrara an evening after day visitors leave. Keep the castle and central streets together, and treat the city walls as a separate walk or cycle.

Where to base yourself
Choose a central stay between the castle and cathedral, while checking the station transfer with luggage. One night is enough only when arrival remains early and simple.
On your feet & with luggage
Ferrara is flat and compact, but the station is outside the centre. Walk, bus or cycle only after checking the luggage and return arrangements.
Start with
Travel from Bologna after breakfast and leave luggage. Walk towards Castello Estense without adding a distant appointment to the arrival window.
Leave room for
Connect the castle, cathedral area and Renaissance streets. Use the city walls only for the section that fits your energy and daylight.
If the weather or your plans change
If the train is delayed or the weather turns, keep the afternoon around the castle and central streets. The walls can be dropped without weakening the route.

Ravenna
Days 5–7 · 2 nightsArrival: Ravenna station is close to the centre, but the mosaic monuments are spread across several sites. Leave luggage first and check opening times before choosing the order.
Use one full day for a small group of mosaic sites rather than racing between every monument. Keep the second half-day for streets, churches and a relaxed departure.

Where to base yourself
Stay between Ravenna station and the mosaic cluster if possible. Compare each property by the walk to both the station and the first monument.
On your feet & with luggage
Ravenna’s centre is manageable on foot, though the mosaic sites are spread across several blocks and historic surfaces vary. Separate the monument loop from the luggage transfer.
Start with
Use the full day for San Vitale, Galla Placidia and one additional mosaic site, following the access conditions on the official visitor information.
Leave room for
Keep the arrival afternoon and final morning for Ravenna’s streets, churches and cafés. Several small visits work better than one rushed circuit across every monument.
If the weather or your plans change
If a site is closed or fully booked, choose another monument in the centre and retain the unhurried city walk. Do not build the whole stay around a single admission slot.
