A useful base needs time of its own
Give Bologna at least one unhurried day before adding rail outings. The station makes other cities reachable, but Bologna’s porticoes, markets and historic streets should not become only the walk between two trains.

Use the rail network to reduce hotel changes
Bologna Centrale is served by regional, intercity and high-speed trains. The official Bologna arrival guide presents the city as a rail junction for neighbouring places and major Italian cities. That makes one Bologna stay useful when you want to visit Emilia-Romagna without packing every morning.
A base is most efficient when the day trips use direct or simple trains and the hotel does not add a difficult cross-city transfer. Compare a station-area stay with the atmosphere of the historic centre, then include the walk or bus journey you will repeat.
02 / Bologna Centrale
Allow time for a large, multi-level station
RFI’s Bologna Centrale station page lists the station’s facilities, accessibility information and live departures. High-speed platforms can require a longer internal walk than a small station, so arrive with enough time to follow the train number and platform signs.
Save the station exit that suits your accommodation. Piazza delle Medaglie d’Oro faces the city-centre side; the Via de’ Carracci side also serves the airport connection. If mobility assistance is needed, arrange it through RFI rather than assuming every lift will be available on the day.
03 / The city between trains
Walk the centre and use buses for the longer edges
The old town is suited to a connected walk, with shelter from many of the porticoes, but distances still add up. Build the day around a few neighbourhoods and leave time for meals rather than crossing the city repeatedly.
TPER operates Bologna’s buses. The official city transport overview explains where tickets are sold and points to current operator information. Check fare and validation rules on the travel date, especially before relying on an onboard purchase.

Three possible outings do not mean a three-day checklist. Choose one or two that add something different to the trip, and leave Bologna itself enough daylight and appetite.

Connect the airport to the station plan
Marconi Express links Bologna Airport with Bologna Centrale. Its official service page explains where to find the platforms at the airport and on the Via de’ Carracci side of the station. Check live service information, fares and any replacement transport before travel.
If the flight is late or very early, check the transport operating at that hour and the route from its final stop. For an onward train, add time to move through Bologna Centrale; do not treat the airport vehicle’s arrival as the moment you reach your platform.
