Bari Airport to the city: train, shuttle or local bus?

Bari Airport (BRI) has a Ferrotramviaria rail connection to Bari Centrale, a Tempesta shuttle to the station area and the local AMTAB bus 16. The train avoids road traffic; the right bus can put you nearer your address. Bari Vecchia still needs a final walk or local connection.

Choose the operator as well as the station

The airport train uses Ferrotramviaria, also signed Ferrovie del Nord Barese. Its Centrale station is adjacent to the mainline railway, not the same set of platforms. For a connection towards Polignano, Lecce or Matera, leave time to reach the next operator’s departure area.

Compare the three public-transport options

ServiceAdult single fareRide and arrival
Ferrotramviaria train€5.30 to Bari CentraleAbout 17–20 minutes on the checked Monday–Saturday timetable; add the terminal-to-station walk and waiting.
Tempesta shuttle€5Operator estimate about 30 minutes to the Centrale area, depending on traffic.
AMTAB bus 16€1 ordinary single; €1.20 for a 90-minute ticketLocal stopping service to Piazza Aldo Moro. Check the selected journey rather than allowing the shuttle’s time.

Fares were checked on against Ferrotramviaria, Tempesta and the official MUVT urban fare list. The train range comes from the timetable effective 15 March 2026, not a guaranteed connection time. Sunday and holiday services have a separate schedule.

A taxi is another option when public services do not fit, particularly with bulky bags or a very early flight. Use the authorised rank or an arranged operator and confirm the destination, luggage and charging basis before travelling.

Take the train to Ferrotramviaria’s Bari Centrale

Follow the airport railway signs, then select Bari Centrale in the Ferrotramviaria journey planner and timetables. Check the train’s stopping pattern and service notices for your date. Do not substitute Bari Palese for the airport station just because its name resembles the airport’s location.

Buy through the operator’s ticket channels or follow its “Paga e Via” contactless instructions. Contactless payment is for one passenger per card; it is not a way to tap a whole party through the same gate. Keep the same card or device available throughout the journey, including the operator’s checks and any required exit validation.

If you buy an integrated itinerary through Trenitalia, read the separate airport-leg conditions. Trenitalia’s Bari Airport page explains that it sells this connection together with a rail journey; the airport service is still operated by Ferrotramviaria.

For step-free travel or boarding assistance, use Ferrotramviaria’s accessibility information before booking. Arrange help for this operator as well as any separate onward train.

Find the Tempesta shuttle’s current stop

Tempesta’s published service notice places its city stop in Piazza Aldo Moro, at the corner of Via De Cesare, following a relocation for works. At the airport, follow the “Shuttle Bus” directions outside arrivals to the signed pickup area. Use the marked pedestrian route and confirm the operator on the vehicle.

The operator sells tickets onboard and online through its linked booking service. It runs to its own timetable and explicitly says it does not wait for delayed flights. Compare the next departure you can actually reach after collecting luggage, not the flight’s scheduled landing time.

Use AMTAB 16 when the local route suits you

Bus 16 connects the airport with Piazza Aldo Moro on the city network. It makes local stops, so it is a different proposition from the station shuttle. Open AMTAB’s current route and service information and check line 16 for your day and direction before choosing it.

The lower fare can make sense when you have a relaxed arrival and little luggage. It is less helpful if a long wait makes you miss an onward train. Buy the appropriate urban ticket, follow its validation instructions and check whether a change needs the timed product rather than the ordinary single.

Reach the right station area, then your accommodation

Our Bari Centrale guide separates the mainline, Ferrotramviaria and FAL areas. Follow the operator name on your ticket and verify the live platform rather than expecting every train to appear on one departure board.

Piazza Aldo Moro is on the city-centre side. A stay in Bari Vecchia still involves a last leg: ask your host for the easiest approach with bags and check the entrance before walking away from the station. If you are connecting inland, the Bari–Alberobello–Matera route treats those journeys as separate travel steps.

Build the return journey around the flight

For the train, return to the Ferrotramviaria area and choose a service that calls at Aeroporto. For the shuttle, reconfirm the city pickup point; works can move a stop. Check the timetable for the correct weekday or holiday and leave time between arriving at the airport station or bus stop and reaching departures.

  • The service gets me to the terminal by my airline’s required arrival time.
  • I know the operator, station area or exact bus stop.
  • I included waiting, the terminal walk and a margin for disruption.
  • If public transport starts too late, I have an arranged alternative.

For the rest of your trip, compare our Italy itineraries or build a route around your own overnight stops.
