What to expect at each stop.
Bari
Days 1–3 · 3 nightsArrival: Bari Centrale is shared by several transport systems and their entrances are not identical. Identify the operator and platform area before each regional departure.
Give Bari Vecchia and the seafront their own day, then keep one flexible day for a rail outing or a slower city plan. The next two bases already cover inland Puglia and Matera.

Where to base yourself
Stay between Bari Centrale and the old town, or on a direct local route. Check which side of the station your next operator uses before choosing solely by map distance.
On your feet & with luggage
Bari is mostly an urban walk, but the station complex and old-town paving add distance. Identify the correct operator entrance before carrying luggage across the complex.
Start with
Walk Bari Vecchia before the busiest hours and keep one church or indoor visit as the anchor. Use another morning for a confirmed regional outing or a slower market-and-seafront day.
Leave room for
Follow the old streets towards the seafront, then return through the new-town grid. Keep the last evening free before the inland journey.
If the weather or your plans change
In strong heat, split the old town and seafront between morning and evening. The optional outing can be dropped without weakening the three-city route.

Alberobello
Days 4–5 · 2 nightsArrival: Current rail-and-bus arrangements depend on the date. Check the exact Trenitalia or Ferrovie del Sud Est itinerary, the stop name and the walk to the accommodation before departure.
Use the arrival afternoon for orientation and visit the trulli quarters early or later the next day. An overnight stay leaves room for neighbourhoods beyond the busiest central lanes.

Where to base yourself
A central stay keeps both trulli districts walkable, but confirm the route from the arrival stop and any stairs within the property.
On your feet & with luggage
Alberobello is walkable but gently hilly, with stone streets and crowded central lanes. Check the arrival stop and accommodation approach before travelling.
Start with
Visit Rione Monti early, then cross to a viewpoint and the quieter Aia Piccola area. Respect signs and remember that many trulli remain homes or businesses.
Leave room for
Use the arrival afternoon for orientation and one small museum or neighbourhood loop. Prepare the next transfer before dinner rather than improvising at the stop.
If the weather or your plans change
If the incoming service changes, keep the first day central and move the longer walk to the full morning. Do not add a rural excursion without a confirmed return.

Matera
Days 6–8 · 2 nightsArrival: Matera Centrale is near the modern centre rather than inside the Sassi. The historic districts involve slopes, steps and uneven stone, so verify the final approach to the accommodation with luggage.
Begin from an upper viewpoint before descending into one Sasso. Use the full day for a small group of churches, houses or museums and keep a second route for the evening light.

Where to base yourself
A Sassi stay is atmospheric but can involve steep steps. A modern-centre base near the upper viewpoints can make arrival and departure with luggage simpler.
On your feet & with luggage
Matera has sustained slopes, steps and uneven stone. Choose an upper-city base when a steep luggage transfer is unsuitable and confirm accessible routes with individual venues.
Start with
Start at Piazza Vittorio Veneto and descend through one Sasso. Keep the full day to a compact group of churches, houses or museums rather than repeatedly crossing the ravine.
Leave room for
Use the arrival afternoon only for an upper viewpoint if the transfer runs long. Return for a second route in softer evening light after leaving the bag.
If the weather or your plans change
In rain or extreme heat, choose nearby interiors and avoid slippery stone descents. Ask individual sites about access rather than assuming the historic district is uniform.
