Your itinerary at a glance
Plan your time, not just your stops.
Fifteen days, fourteen nights: one night in Milan, four in Ortisei, one in Venice, three in Florence, three in Amalfi and two in Rome. Ortisei, Florence and Amalfi town are recommended bases for this car-free version; choosing different towns or hotels can change the transfers substantially.
When to go & what to expect
Plan this version around the overlap between mountain sightseeing-lift operations and coastal ferry services. Outside those operating seasons, adapt the mountain outings and use coastal buses instead of assuming the same experience is available year-round. Mountain visibility, lift operations and coastal sea conditions matter more than a single forecast for Italy. The route travels south past Rome to the coast, then returns to Rome for the final stay. With five travel days, it is more demanding than our shorter itineraries.
Build your budget
Budget for 14 nights, five travel days, local buses, optional lifts and any coastal boats. Compare rail fares only after checking the mountain and coastal connections. Ask about accommodation guest passes in Val Gardena; do not assume they cover mountain lifts. Reserve flexibility for a bus replacement or changed coastal departure rather than spending the full budget on fixed excursions.

The travel days
The journeys between your stays.
Milano Centrale → Ortisei via Bolzano / Ponte Gardena
Reserve most of the travel day
Rail plus valley bus; connections determine the total time.
Compare trains via Verona towards Bolzano, then the valley connection shown by the official planner. Bus 350 links Bolzano, Ponte Gardena and Val Gardena. Search the complete journey to Ortisei before choosing a rail arrival; not every service calls at every interchange. Keep the arrival evening free.

Reserve most of the travel day
Valley bus plus rail, with a connection commonly needed at Verona.
Take an early valley bus to the rail interchange selected by the planner, then continue towards Venice, commonly with a change at Verona. Compare the full bus-and-rail journey rather than assuming there is a direct train from the valley. With only one Venice night, an earlier arrival has real value.

About 2–2½ hours on the train
Direct high-speed service; station access is additional.
A direct high-speed train keeps this leg simple. Choose Santa Lucia if staying on the islands, not Mestre by accident. Confirm luggage storage before using the morning for a walk; leave enough time to return for bags and reach the station.

A long transfer day, not a sightseeing day
High-speed rail to Salerno, then ferry or bus. Confirm the whole connection.
Take a high-speed train to Salerno, then the coastal transfer. Travelmar’s Piazza Concordia pier is a short walk from the station, but confirm the pier on your ticket. Allow at least an hour between scheduled train arrival and sailing as a planning buffer, not a guaranteed connection. If boats are cancelled, check bus 5120 and allow for road traffic.

Allow at least half a day for the full journey
Ferry or bus to Salerno, then high-speed rail to Rome; longer if disrupted.
Confirm the ferry timetable for your departure day, or use the coastal bus to Salerno. Choose a rail fare and departure that can absorb a delayed coastal transfer. As a planning buffer, allow at least 90 minutes from scheduled ferry arrival to train departure; more if using the bus. The last two nights in Rome keep this transfer separate from the final departure day.

What to expect at each stop.
Milan
Day 1 · 1 nightArrival: Start with one night in Milan. Choose accommodation with a straightforward connection to Milano Centrale for the next morning; the arrival airport and flight time are not part of this plan.
This is an arrival stop, not a full Milan city break. Keep one walk and a relaxed dinner rather than trying to fit the main museums into a few hours.
- Duomo square if arrival time allows
- A short walk in Brera
- Prepare for the next morning’s train
Where to base yourself
For one night, a well-connected location near Centrale is more useful than a remote bargain. Confirm late check-in if arriving by air; the airport transfer needs its own allowance.
On your feet & with luggage
An arrival day with luggage. Use the Metro to reduce long cross-city walks and check station lifts where needed.
Start with
Let the arrival time set the programme. If you have several hours, choose the Duomo area or Brera, not both plus a timed museum visit.
Leave room for
Have dinner, organise tickets and check the next day’s train and valley-bus combination. This short stop is where travelling light starts to pay off.
If the weather or your plans change
After a delayed flight or in rain, keep the evening close to the hotel. Do not turn a one-night arrival stop into a race through the city.
Search Milano Centrale to your chosen South Tyrol interchange, then check the separate bus leg.
Dolomites · Ortisei / St. Ulrich
Days 2–5 · 4 nightsArrival: Our suggested mountain base is Ortisei in Val Gardena. Reach the valley by rail to Bolzano or Ponte Gardena/Waidbruck, then a connecting bus. Ortisei itself has no mainline railway station.
Four nights give you three full days, not four. Keep one day flexible and choose local outings rather than attempting to see every part of the Dolomites from a single base.
- Ortisei village and the valley
- Seceda by lift, if operating and weather permits
- An Alpe di Siusi outing or a quieter valley day
Where to base yourself
Choose Ortisei within a manageable walk of a valley bus stop. A hillside hotel can add a steep final climb even when it looks close on the map. Four nights leave three full days between arrival and departure.
On your feet & with luggage
Village streets can be steep, and lift-served viewpoints still involve uneven mountain ground. Choose walks for the least confident member of the group and use local trail advice rather than the overview map.
Start with
Use the arrival day to settle in. On the clearest of the three full days, consider the Ortisei–Furnes–Seceda lifts after checking operations and ticket rules. Staying near a lift does not make the paths at the top level or suitable for everyone.
Leave room for
Keep another day for Alpe di Siusi or a valley outing, and leave the third flexible. This base is not a convenient starting point for collecting Cortina, Tre Cime and Lago di Braies in the same short stay.
If the weather or your plans change
In poor visibility, thunderstorms or snow, choose a village day and follow local advice. Operating seasons differ by lift; check every lift needed for an outing rather than assuming the whole network is open. The weather note below is for Ortisei, not the summit.
Check operating status, the specific lifts included and the last descent before purchasing.
Venice
Day 6 · 1 nightArrival: Book the rail journey to Venezia Santa Lucia for an island stay. After the journey down from the mountains, keep the final walk or vaporetto ride to your accommodation simple.
One night means an evening and part of the following morning. Choose a compact neighbourhood walk; this stop does not leave room for a full island-hopping day.
- An evening in Cannaregio
- A purposeful vaporetto journey
- A short morning walk before the Florence train
Where to base yourself
For this one-night stay, favour a simple arrival from Santa Lucia. Count bridges and steps to the property; a distant island or awkward bag transfer can consume much of the visit.
On your feet & with luggage
Bridges, steps and luggage are the main friction on a short stay. Confirm the full route from the station or vaporetto stop to the accommodation.
Start with
The journey from Ortisei takes the first part of the day. After checking in, start with Cannaregio and keep the evening within a comfortable walking area.
Leave room for
Choose one short walk or vaporetto journey, then leave the next morning unhurried. A separate Murano and Burano excursion does not fit comfortably into this stop.
If the weather or your plans change
If the mountain transfer runs late, shorten the sightseeing rather than delaying dinner and rest. Check local visitor-access rules independently of transport tickets.
Buy for the boat journeys you will actually take during this short stay.
Tuscany · Florence
Days 7–9 · 3 nightsArrival: Use Firenze Santa Maria Novella and stay in Florence for this car-free version. A countryside property would require a separate check of its bus service and last-mile access.
Three nights allow an arrival afternoon and two full days. Give Florence at least one of them; keep a second city day as the default rather than adding a distant rural stop simply to tick off Tuscany.
- One reserved museum visit
- The Arno and Oltrarno
- A clear-evening viewpoint, with a bus option
Where to base yourself
Florence is the proposed Tuscany base. The Santa Maria Novella side of the centre simplifies both high-speed train journeys; check lift access and the walk with bags.
On your feet & with luggage
The centre is walkable but often paved unevenly. Use a bus for an uphill viewpoint if needed and ask about stairs at your accommodation.
Start with
Use the arrival afternoon for the centre. Reserve one of the two full mornings for the Uffizi or another chosen museum rather than booking several major collections back-to-back.
Leave room for
Walk the Arno and Oltrarno, or save the viewpoint at Piazzale Michelangelo for a clear evening. If choosing a day trip elsewhere in Tuscany, verify the return service before committing; a rural hotel is a different itinerary.
If the weather or your plans change
In rain, expand the indoor part of the day. Keep the departure day free for the long journey south instead of adding a morning attraction before the train.
Choose the date and official ticket type for your museum day.
Amalfi Coast · Amalfi town
Days 10–12 · 3 nightsArrival: Our suggested base is Amalfi town. Take the train to Salerno, then a ferry when running, or SITA Sud bus 5120. The coastal transfer is a separate journey, not part of the high-speed rail ticket.
Use one full day for Amalfi and nearby streets, and the other for a single coastal outing if services and sea conditions allow. Staying in Amalfi avoids turning every day into a return journey from Salerno.
- Amalfi’s waterfront and cathedral square
- A slow day without luggage
- An optional ferry outing to Positano
Where to base yourself
Amalfi town is the proposed coastal base, ideally with a manageable route from the port and bus terminus. Confirm the exact number of stairs. Salerno is a rail-convenient alternative, but would change these nights into coastal day trips.
On your feet & with luggage
Amalfi and Positano include steep streets and steps. Check boarding access, bag handling and the approach to the property; a ferry journey does not guarantee a step-free transfer.
Start with
Keep the first full day for Amalfi’s waterfront and cathedral square. Treat the cathedral steps and any uphill walk as separate physical choices.
Leave room for
Use the second full day for one ferry outing, such as Positano, only if the outward and return services suit the weather. Buy no excursion that forces you to depend on the last boat back.
If the weather or your plans change
If ferries stop, a bus is an alternative, not an equally fast replacement: queues and winding-road traffic can extend the day. Skip the outing if necessary. Re-check your onward connection before your final evening on the coast.
Choose the correct ports and travel dates; confirm luggage rules and cancellation conditions with the operator.
Rome
Days 13–15 · 2 nightsArrival: Return from Amalfi to Salerno, then take a train to Roma Termini. Do not make the coastal connection depend on the day’s final available service.
Two nights leave one full sightseeing day. Pick ancient Rome or another major museum visit, then leave space for a neighbourhood walk and your onward departure.
- One major sight booked for the full day
- Pantheon and Piazza Navona area
- A separate, unhurried airport or onward transfer
Where to base yourself
Choose a central location with a practical connection from Termini and to the final departure point. This plan does not assume a particular airport or flight time.
On your feet & with luggage
Spread the walking across neighbourhoods and use local transport between them. Check accessible entrances separately when booking ancient sites.
Start with
Keep the arrival day for the transfer and an easy walk. On the full day in Rome, choose one main visit, such as the Colosseum and Forum, with enough time around the reservation.
Leave room for
Leave the remainder of the full day for the Pantheon and Piazza Navona area, or a quieter neighbourhood meal. On departure day, plan only what your onward departure genuinely allows.
If the weather or your plans change
If the coastal transfer is delayed, drop arrival-day sightseeing. Keep the main reservation on the full Rome day and check the final airport or rail connection separately.
Book for the full day in Rome, not immediately after the coastal transfer.
