What to expect at each stop.
Palermo
Days 1–3 · 3 nightsArrival: Palermo Centrale works for the eastbound railway and airport train, but the city spreads far beyond the station. Choose a neighbourhood after checking the local journey you will repeat.
Use two full days for the historic centre, markets and one major cultural visit. Monreale is a separate bus outing rather than part of the arrival day.

Where to base yourself
Choose a base around the historic-centre walks you want and a repeatable link to Palermo Centrale. The station edge and the northern neighbourhoods suit different trips.
On your feet & with luggage
Palermo’s sights cover a wide area and pavements vary. Use buses for outer visits and avoid carrying luggage through the markets and historic lanes.
Start with
Walk from the cathedral towards Quattro Canti and choose one market area. Give a separate morning to a palace, chapel or Monreale.
Leave room for
Keep time for neighbourhood distance and heat. Palermo is large enough that one extra bus journey can replace an unrealistic cross-city walk.

Use a museum, church interior or shorter food-focused route when the weather makes a long walk uncomfortable.

Cefalù
Day 4 · 1 nightArrival: The station is within the town but not on the beach. Walk to the accommodation first and avoid planning a long climb with luggage.
Use the overnight for the cathedral, waterfront and a calmer evening. The Rocca climb is optional and should be planned around heat, footwear and opening conditions.

Where to base yourself
Stay between the station and old town if the visit is short. Beachfront accommodation can add distance to the next morning’s train.
On your feet & with luggage
The station-to-centre walk is manageable, but the Rocca is a separate steep climb. Do not combine it with luggage or midday heat.
Start with
Arrive and begin with the cathedral and old streets. Leave the Rocca climb for conditions that suit it.
Leave room for
Use the waterfront and beach as a slow second half of the day. Confirm the next transfer before dinner.
If the weather or your plans change
If the climb is closed or too hot, stay around the cathedral, harbour and seafront rather than forcing the viewpoint.

Catania
Days 5–8 · 3 nightsArrival: Catania Centrale is near the coast and outside the core baroque streets. Check the local bus or walking connection and leave the first afternoon flexible after the long transfer.
Give Catania one full city day and choose either Taormina or another east-coast outing. An Etna excursion requires its own transport and weather plan.

Where to base yourself
Choose a central base with a clear connection to Catania Centrale or the airport bus you will eventually use. Check late-evening transport if staying away from the core.
On your feet & with luggage
Catania’s central streets include lava-stone paving and the station lies outside the main core. Taormina adds a steep onward connection from its station.
Start with
Use the first full day for Piazza del Duomo, the market area and baroque streets. Choose Taormina or another rail outing for the second clear day.
Leave room for
Keep the city afternoon flexible after the long arrival. An Etna visit belongs on a separate booked excursion with its own weather and return checks.
If the weather or your plans change
If a day trip is disrupted, remain in Catania or choose a shorter train journey on the east-coast line.
