Our pick: late spring through early autumn for a city-and-plateau trip. This is not a high-alpine hiking itinerary. In colder months, reassess walking plans, daylight and lift maintenance before booking around an excursion.

Start with two intercity rail legs and six nights. Ask your Bolzano accommodation whether a guest transport card is included and what it covers before buying an overlapping local pass. Compare cable-car and railway tickets for your chosen day.

Direct high-speed train; regional services take longer.
Compare direct rail services and fare conditions. Choose a departure that leaves an afternoon in Verona; the station is not in the historic centre, so allow a final bus or walk.

What to expect at each stop.
Milan
Days 1–2 · 2 nightsArrival: Milano Centrale is the main long-distance hub; allow time to understand the station before departure day.
Pair one headline sight with a neighbourhood walk. Milan works best when it is not reduced to a transfer.

Where to base yourself
A well-connected Metro location can be more useful than a room beside a famous sight. Check the connection to Centrale and avoid an airport-area hotel for a city stay.
On your feet & with luggage
Neighbourhood walks can be kept short by using transit. The Duomo terraces are a separate physical commitment: check remaining stairs even when choosing a lift ticket. Confirm station lifts if you need a step-free transfer.
Start with
Give your full morning to the Duomo area. If you want the terraces, choose the appropriate official ticket and access method rather than assuming every cathedral ticket includes them.
Leave room for
Choose Brera for a neighbourhood walk, or Navigli for an evening. Use public transport between areas and keep the arrival day free of hard-to-change reservations.
If the weather or your plans change
In poor weather, swap a long outdoor loop for a reserved indoor visit. Leave enough time to collect bags before the train rather than fitting in one last district.

Verona
Day 3 · 1 nightArrival: Verona Porta Nuova is outside the old centre but connected by frequent city buses.
One afternoon and evening give you time for the main squares and a riverside walk. Add a second night for a fuller day in Verona.

Where to base yourself
The Piazza Bra side of the centre makes a short stay convenient. Compare the final walk or city bus from Porta Nuova, not just the straight-line distance.
On your feet & with luggage
Leave energy for the walk after arriving at Porta Nuova, or take a city bus towards the centre. The river walk is a gentler choice than adding uphill viewpoints. Historic paving can be awkward with small suitcase wheels.
Start with
Travel from Milan and drop your bag if the property allows it. Start around Piazza Bra and the Arena; treat an interior visit or performance as a separate booking decision.
Leave room for
Continue towards Piazza delle Erbe and the river. If you have the energy, finish near Ponte Pietra; an extra Verona night gives this walk room to breathe.
If the weather or your plans change
Keep your evening flexible. If you book a performance, check its end time and the return journey to your accommodation instead of combining it with a late onward train.

Bolzano / Bozen
Days 4–7 · 3 nightsArrival: The station is close to the compact centre and connects into South Tyrol’s integrated network.
Base in Bolzano and use regional trains, buses and the Renon cable car for day trips instead of changing hotels.

Where to base yourself
Stay in or near the centre with an easy station connection. Ask about a guest transport card, its validity and included services before purchasing local tickets.
On your feet & with luggage
Keep the old-town stroll separate from the plateau excursion. The cable car removes a major climb, but plateau walks can still be hilly or uneven. Choose short village walks and verify boarding access and the return service.
Start with
Use arrival day for the old town. On the clearest full day, take the Renon/Ritten cable car from Bolzano to Soprabolzano/Oberbozen, then the light railway towards Collalbo/Klobenstein.
Leave room for
Keep the plateau outing modest: a village stroll, lunch and a return with spare time. Use the other full day for Bolzano or a valley outing chosen from the current journey planner.
If the weather or your plans change
If visibility is poor or the cable car is closed, choose the city day instead. Check the last return service and any maintenance notices before setting out. The route map is for orientation, not for navigating mountain paths.
