What to expect at each stop.
Bari
Days 1–2 · 2 nightsArrival: Bari Centrale is south of the old town. Choose a stay on a direct walking or local-transit line and distinguish the national railway platforms from the other operators around the station.
Use one full day for Bari Vecchia, the seafront and the modern centre. Keep airport arrival and the first evening free of a timed excursion.

Where to base yourself
A base between Bari Centrale and Bari Vecchia balances onward rail with evening walking. Check the route after dark and the exact operator for any airport connection.
On your feet & with luggage
Bari’s station-to-old-town route is mostly urban walking, with polished or uneven paving inside Bari Vecchia. Use local transport for longer cross-city trips.
Start with
Start with Bari Vecchia and the basilica area. Keep the seafront for later when the light and temperature are more comfortable.
Leave room for
Walk part of the lungomare and explore the modern grid. Use the evening for food rather than adding a distant day trip.

In poor weather, choose one museum or covered food-focused activity and shorten the waterfront walk.

Polignano a Mare
Day 3 · 1 nightArrival: The station is inland from the old town and coast. Walk the complete route on a map before choosing a property, especially if you have a wheeled suitcase.
An overnight turns Polignano into a quieter evening and morning stop. Keep the beach conditional on weather and use the cliffside town itself as the reliable plan.

Where to base yourself
Choose a place between the station and old town, accepting that the final blocks near the coast may be uneven. Confirm bag storage before checkout.
On your feet & with luggage
The coastal viewpoint and old town include slopes and steps. The railway station is inland, so plan the full bag-carrying route.
Start with
Arrive, leave luggage and explore the old town and cliff viewpoints. Treat beach time as optional rather than the only reason for the stop.
Leave room for
Stay through the quieter evening and take an early waterfront walk before the next train. Avoid a second coastal town on the same day.
If the weather or your plans change
If the sea or weather does not suit, use the old town, cafés and viewpoints. The overnight still breaks the rail route usefully.

Lecce
Days 4–7 · 3 nightsArrival: Lecce station is west of the historic centre. Choose accommodation that works for both the city walk and any bus or rail day trip you add.
Give Lecce a full unhurried day, then choose one Salento outing after checking the seasonal connection. Otranto and Porto Cesareo need different transport plans.

Where to base yourself
Stay inside or just outside the historic centre with a clear station or bus connection. A picturesque address is less useful if every day trip begins with a long walk.
On your feet & with luggage
Lecce is walkable but summer heat and stone paving add effort. Many Salento outings require an extra bus connection beyond the station.
Start with
Give Lecce’s baroque centre its own morning. On another day, choose one coast or inland outing after checking both directions.
Leave room for
Use the hottest part of the day for a long lunch or indoor visit, then return to the streets in the evening.
If the weather or your plans change
Without a suitable seasonal connection, keep the extra day in Lecce or take a simple rail trip on the main corridor.
