The airport railway station is not the terminal
Alibus goes into the city. Fontanarossa Airlink combines a short station shuttle with a separate train. These are different journeys: a rail search starting at the station omits the first step from arrivals unless you select the combined bus-and-train option.
Compare the journey to your actual destination

For a central hotel, start with Alibus and the final walk. For an onward railway journey, compare the combined connection with going to Centrale first. The cheapest individual ticket is not necessarily the simplest complete transfer.
Find Alibus, then choose your city stop
Follow the airport’s bus signs and check the vehicle’s Alibus destination. The operator describes the airport terminus as the area in front of the old terminal. Confirm the current stop on its Alibus route map rather than following an unrelated airport coach.
The checked weekday timetable, effective 14 September 2026, lists airport departures from 04:40 until 00:30 the following morning. It schedules passage at Centrale 15 minutes after departure. That is a timetable estimate for the station, not a promise of reaching every city-centre hotel in fifteen minutes. Waiting, traffic and the final walk add time.
The holiday timetable linked at the time of checking lists the same Alibus departures. Intervals vary through the day. The route also serves the Via Etnea and Stesicoro area; use the stop order to choose where to leave the bus.
You can buy the Alibus ticket onboard with cash or a payment card, or through the operator’s listed sales channels. Follow the ticket’s validation instructions. A normal urban ticket or an FCE ticket does not become valid on Alibus just because it covers another city journey; the €4 Alibus ticket is the relevant product.
Before setting out, check AMTS service notices for diversions. A temporary city-centre closure can make a normally convenient stop a poor choice with bags.
Use the shuttle and train as two connected steps

In Trenitalia’s journey search, enter Catania Aeroporto Fontanarossa Bus to include the terminal connection. Entering only Catania Aeroporto Fontanarossa means the railway station. The Airlink bus leaves outside arrivals and uses the forecourt at the railway station.
Review the itinerary before paying: it should show the bus component and the train you intend to take. Trenitalia sells this bus leg with a rail journey, not on its own, and the two operators retain separate transport contracts. Do not assume a combined purchase gives every part the same change or refund conditions.
Leave room for a late arrival, finding the shuttle and reaching the right platform. For the return, check that the shuttle still runs when your train reaches Fontanarossa; a late rail arrival alone does not prove you can complete the journey to departures.

Include the walk from the stop to your accommodation

Catania Centrale and Piazza del Duomo are different arrival points. Before boarding, save the accommodation entrance and a suitable stop. Ask your host which approach works with luggage, especially if the address is on a pedestrian street or up stairs.
A taxi can be useful for that final leg or for a late flight. Use the airport’s taxi information to identify the service, then confirm the fare basis and destination. For a prearranged pickup, agree the meeting point and delayed-flight arrangements rather than relying on a vague “city centre” booking.
Plan the airport-bound direction again
Alibus follows a city circuit. Your arrival stop and your best departure stop may differ, and the time back need not match the airport-to-station estimate. Use the direction and stop sequence in the current route map; do not assume the bus across the road goes straight to the airport.
- Set the required airport arrival time from your airline’s instructions.
- Find the airport-bound stop and allow time to reach it with bags.
- For rail, check the full train–shuttle itinerary through to the terminal.
- Allow for traffic, waiting and disruption instead of building a connection around the shortest advertised ride.
- If the first or last public service does not fit, arrange a taxi or transfer in advance.
Late at night, calculate from when you can leave arrivals, not from touchdown. If the last usable service has gone, choose an arranged alternative rather than improvising a walk along airport access roads.
Continue beyond Catania without an unnecessary detour
The railway connection can suit an onward journey towards Syracuse, Taormina or Messina. Compare it with the direct coach services in the airport’s bus directory. Choose a destination and date before selecting an operator; not every coach serves central Catania.
